Artist Statement

James Wagstaff (British, b.1989) is a sculptor and installation artist who is based in Muscat, Oman. Influenced by Conceptual art, design and anthropology, his current work features the physicality and psychology of culturally significant objects.Having grown up in a family of professional practicing artists, James’ DNA is a kaleidoscope of creative expression. Competent in all forms of pottery, jewellery silversmithing, carpentry and furniture design, James journeyed to Oman to explore the local creative scene and became infatuated with Khaleeji culture, traditions and values.James has spent the past few years spreading his knowledge of art and craftsmanship by performing workshops for artists and communities in Oman in jewellerysilversmithing, pottery and printmaking.

My artwork includes references to my personal journey of inner healing and deconstruction of my worldview, in the context of living cross-culturally in the Middle East. Using observations of space, objects, and humanity, to lead the audience and I,on a journey of discovery examining our unconscious interactions with people, culture, and God. As an artist, I enjoy making 3 dimensional work and curating experiences. I’m not limited to specific materials to create forms of expression. I appreciate all mediums ranging from performance and installations, to sculpture and prints, using whatever is necessaryto convey the message.
